What to expect at an OBS Drop-In session

You can expect a friendly welcome from our team. Partners and co-parents, grandparents, older children, other family members, friends and supporters of all kinds are very welcome at our sessions. 

The most valuable support for feeding is often from experienced parents, and an important part of our mission is to connect families with each other. You don’t have to have a problem to come to a session; you are very welcome to come to socialise with other families, and to come to as many sessions as you like. Many families come to multiple weekly sessions.  If you do have a problem, we have the skills to help, and to signpost you to other services as necessary.

If you are not comfortable feeding in front of other visitors, please let us know.  You are welcome to email us in advance of your visit, or ask to talk to the facilitator privately.  Due to venue and staffing constraints we are unable to guarantee a private feeding area at every session, but we will always do our best to meet your needs.  

At our sessions you might see babies being breastfed, chestfed, being fed by bottle, cup, nursing supplementer (lactation aid), finger-feeding, using nipple shields, and more.  You might see mothers expressing their milk in a variety of ways.  Babies might be drinking their mother’s milk, donated breastmilk (find our Milk Sharing policy here) or formula milk.  We know that every family’s feeding journey is unique.  Whatever stage you’re at, from pregnancy onwards, and whatever feeding looks like for you, we are here to help.  You can read our Mission Statement here.

Our sessions can be busy! We try to see families in the order in which they arrive, but if a baby and/or mother is distressed, or has an urgent problem, we will prioritise them. Please let one of the team know if you need to see a facilitator and have to leave before the end of the session.

Basic refreshments e.g. tea and coffee are usually provided; this may vary between sessions. You are welcome to bring your own snacks if you would like to.

Language Interpretation

Thanks to our Lottery funding, we now offer the Language Line interpretation service at our drop-in sessions.

This enables interpretation in over 200 languages, via telephone. BSL (sign language) interpretation via mobile phone or tablet is also available. If the language you need is not on this list, it may still be available - in this case, it would be helpful if you could This email address is being protected from spambots. Unfortunately, our Jericho venue doesn't have mobile phone reception. We can still access telephone interpretation there via landline (thanks to the support of the Health Visiting team) but we won't be able to offer BSL interpretation at that venue.

We hope that Language Line will enable more families to find breastfeeding help and a supportive community at OBS
